In Search of the Perfect Toaster

Thanks to my mother my son is now addicted to toasted bread. he needs to have all his bread warm and toasted every morning. Too bad we do not have a toaster!

So the toaster goes in line along with the turbo broiler and oven I want to buy. Something tells me this gets pushed to the beginning of the line!

Some Random Fast Food Facts

I think I need to post this for myself since I have been eating fast food since Saturday! I only get to eat ONE full meal – but that is FAST FOOD!

Ever seen Super Size Me?

  • Television greatly expanded the ability of advertisers to reach children and try to develop brand loyalty early in life. Today the average American child sees more than 10,000 food advertisements each year on television.
  • Burger King’s Double Whopper with cheese contains 923 calories. A man would need to walk for about nine miles to burn it off. Adding french fries and a large cola brings the total calories to an amazing 1,500 calories (2/3 of an adult man’s recommended daily caloric intake).
  • McDonald’s is the largest purchaser of beef, pork, and potatoes and the second largest purchaser of chicken in the world. Its annual orders for french fries constitute 7.5% of America’s entire potato crop.

See HERE for a lot more facts.  French fries, anyone?

Weight Loss Journey

Protein BarsAs most of you know, I am always at a perpetual diet, with no lasting weight loss effects. I just love eating too much plus my work is very (very) sedentary.

I thought I might experiment with my diet these days and I am now soda-free for two days. I am drinking water like a fish, and just consume one full meal a day. I eat protein bars twice a day as a snack and replace two meals with a protein shake. I drink health supplements (5 tablets each) thrice a day.

It takes a bit of getting used to. I hope I can really make it!

Hinulab sa Asin Dagat

Hinulab sa Asin Dagat

This is also one of the specialties of La Mesa Grill.

It is called Kinulob sa Asin Dagat or rock salt cooking. The fish, either tilapia or apahap (local seabass), is wrapped in rock salt and grilled.

The seafood comes from General Santos City, Aklan and Bacolod.

Rock salt cooking is an old way of cooking fish by the Spaniard when refrigerators were not invented yet.  The magic here is, after grilling the fish and removing the burnt rock salt, the fish is not at all salty. Its skin and flesh are very moist like it has been steamed.

I actually finished a whole fish!
Interesting trivia for you too: La Mesa Grill (Mall of Asia) is owned by Senator Kiko Pangilinan and Enrico “Rikki” Dee.

Crispchon

 Crispchon

This is the Crispchon (Crispy Lechon) served at La Mesa Grill. This baby suckling pig is priced between P799.00 – 3999.00. Served in a wrap with veggies, this one would cater to both veggie and pork/meat lovers.

I actually love the wraps! It’s a lechon de leche that’s neither roasted nor baked but deep fried, thus crispchon. And it is served with pandan crepes and garnishes of wansuy, cucumber and leeks with a choice of three sauces (take your pick: garlic, wansuy-infused, Rikki’s choice, spicy pork liver, curry mustard or sweet chili sauce). The curry mustard is said to be Sharon Cuneta’s favorite.

Lamesa waiters will cut the crispchon for you and, if you wish, will roll it lumpia style in the crepe with the veggies, after which you eat it with your choice of sauce. The rest of the crispchon that cannot be cut up, the waiter will take back to the kitchen where it will be salted and refried, and then served back to you.

Making the House a Home

We are hell bent in completing our little house by Christmas. We have now decided which ones to buy and we are just waiting for my big bonus before I go home shopping. Aside from the big purchases like a new bed, shelves, workstation and pillows, I need to get some cooking equipment too! I need new knives and some specific gadgets like these:

Those are a peppermill, garlic twist and egg slicer.

We also need small kitchen appliances like a toaster and a blender. A lighting fixture guide would be needed to to make sure we have ample lighting in the kitchen.

Investing in Gold

With the recession in the US being far from over, people are looking for alternative ways  where to invest their hard-earned money. Sometimes, just saving it in the bank won’t cut it anymore. Mutual funds are a bit risky. There have been suggestions lately that investing on gold would be wise. If you buy gold coins it is said to be very liquid, with a market so reliable. With mutual funds you are likely to get tied down as compared to when you buy gold bullion.

Gold can be bought in bullion form, very much like the coins in the currency market. To buy bullion, you need to make sure you are buying from a reputable company like Gold Coins Gain. When you purchase gold bullions, you are most likely to add stability to your portfolio, thereby substantially helping  offset market fluctuations and reducing the volatility of one’s own portfolio.
