Dealing with Diabetes

We have a history of diabetes in the family. My paternal grandmother has it and now my father has it, even if he is still in denial that he has diabetes. He refuses to have his monthly blood work-up and the medical supplies we bought for him sits untouched. Now a friend of mine, at the young age of 30, has been diagnosed to have diabetes. And it came as a shock for me and an eye-opener for me to start staying away from sweets and lose weight or else I might be diagnosed with one too. She told me that those with more abdominal fat (visceral fat) are more prone to have diabetes, and my tummy has always looked like it is 9 months pregnant.

Better late than never! I am trying to really lose weight permanently this time!

Eating to Cheer Yourself Up

Depression affects so many people in various levels. There are people who pull themselves out of the hole without any help, some just need someone to talk to while some need medical intervention. While I agree that there are people who need anxiety depression treatment, I still believe that therapy like talking and love from family and significant people will help more.

There are even foods that can help alleviate depression!

“Happy Foods” To Chow Down On

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Helps build your brain’s neural connections and the receptor sites for neurotransmitters, resulting in an increase in your level of serotonin. Foods high in Omega 3 include nuts and seeds, oily fish such as tuna or salmon, avocado, dark green vegetables, and extra virgin olive oil.

B Vitamins

Cannot be stored in our bodies and are killed by refined sugars, alcohol, and caffeine, making it necessary to include them in our daily diet. B vitamins affect systems differently, but in general they are a key factor in providing energy for the brain and processing amino acids. To obtain a sufficient daily intake you should consider taking a vitamin supplement in addition to eating foods rich in vitamin B complex.

Amino Acids

5-Hydroxy Tryptophan, made from the amino acid tryptophan, is crucial in boosting your serotonin levels. This can be found in protein-rich foods such as fish, meat, beans and eggs.

Chromium

Is responsible for maintaining a stable blood-sugar level, as insulin is unable to function properly without it. Foods rich in chromium include onions, broccoli, tomatoes, romaine lettuce and grape juice.

Benefits of Sea Salt

We have been made to understand the dangerous side effects of living on a diet high in sodium. Unfortunately, due to fast living, processed foods are high in preservatives which conversely is high in sodium. These are the ready meals you see in the grocery and the meals you take out from fast food restaurants. The average Western diet is too high in sodium. In the US, average sodium-intake in the daily diet is 4,000-5,000 mg. In the UK, dietary sodium-intake averages 3,500 mg daily. That is why many people are pushing for the use of sea salt. The benefits of sea salt outweigh the disadvantages of using table salt.

Sea salt is produced through evaporation of seawater, usually with little processing, which leaves behind some trace minerals and elements depending on its water source. These insignificant amounts of minerals add flavor and color to sea salt. Natural sea salt retains the trace minerals – and is effective.

One of the sea salt health benefits is using them when taking a bath. The minerals in sea salt is effective in helping alleviate certain skin conditions such as psoriasis. It has also been shown in studies to help relieve symptoms of osteoarthritis and tendonitis

Food Addiction

Everyone is addicted to something – whether it be the popular ones like drugs, sex, alcohol and the less thought of ones like attention or food. Have you ever seen the documentary entitled Super Size Me in 2004? Documentarian Morgan Spurlock ate McDonalds Super Size Meals for 30 days, three times a day and it proved that so many Americans are obese because of sedentary lifestyles and fast food.

How can you tell the habits of a food addict? Here are some traits you should look out for.

1. They use food to soother their emotions. Typically a food addict will push down unpleasant feelings with food. Not just any food, but comfort foods!
2.Fixation With Food You think about food all the time and you are always planning your next sugar high.
3.Secret Binges. Food addicts often hide food or only binge when they are alone.
4.Eat Until the Food is Gone. Some people were raised to clean their plates and they have a hard time breaking the habit. You lack control to stop eating.
5.Feeling Guilty. Food addicts tend to feel guilty after indulging in too much of the wrong foods.

Is there hope for food addicts? Of course there is! One just needs to acknowledge this first. Remember how the controversial Tiger Woods checked himself into rehab? If you are a celebrity, the

The Truth About Stretch Marks

The truth about stretch marks is you can be predisposed to it. If your mother had it, you probably will have it too. You do not need to be pregnant to get it, but pregnancy aggravates it since your skin stretches badly. You can lessen the scars by applying cocoa butter stretch marks but you need to understand that they will never go away, they will only lighten in time. Be proud of them – they are proof that you have carried motherhood in your tummy for 9 months!
