Grocery Budgeting and Meal Planning

I am taking the budgeting seriously this month. I want to come up with a concrete budget monthly plan. And to get that, I need numbers as proof. So what I have been doing since the first of the month was log all expenses. I also have been refraining from spending anything else from what I receive (and withdraw) from my bank. When I do grocery shopping I keep the receipts and log the prices of commonly-used items in an Excel file. I have been playing with brand names and sizes so I can compare which is more economical. Our budget this month will balloon I’m sure but at least we can start right next month. I am so tired of getting a payday advance every month. While it is easy and very helpful for families who need cash, it certainly is better to have cash on hand all the time so you can budget easily and save the rest.

Here are things I did:
1. Play with menus for the week. I incorporated fish and more veggies for us from two to three times a week.
2. Monthly commodities like rice, mineral water, gas and my daughter’s milk are budgeted at the beginning of the month. (Rice and gas are replaced every 2-3 months).
3. I realized I’m spending a lot on my son’s snacks and lunch meal at school. I need tips and creative ideas to have variety on a budget.
4. We haven’t eaten out since the month started. But we do grab a bit after a mass on a food stand. I need to incorporate that in our budget.
5. Fresh fruits need to be in our food too – I want my kids to be healthy. But since I don’t want to have much petty cash with me all the time, it needs to be bought when the helper goes to market.
6. It is cheaper to buy menu items from the market. Grocery shopping is better for items in the fridge and snacks.

Five for Wednesday

1. What kinds of pizza do you like?
Loads of cheese! I seem to like those from Shakey’s, Yellow Cab and California Pizza Kitchen best. I love Italian food a lot – that is why the most effective diet pills don’t work on me at all.

2. How do you shop in a grocery store?
I go aisle to aisle, from the entrance.

3. What is the most unusual combination of items you put between two slices of bread and called a sandwich?
Hmmmm….condensed milk!

4. Do you have a favorite simple recipe that has five or less ingredients? Share!
Korean Beef Stew

5. Do you buy water in plastic bottles?
If it’s branded :)

Five For Wednesday

button by you.

1. When eating breakfast-what’s your breakfast meat of choice?
Hotdogs and eggs or tocino and eggs or tapa and eggs :) Actually I’m not really choosy when it comes to food, I can eat just about anything – that’s why I need appetite suppressants for me to lose weight! I’m unstoppable! Haha!

2. If you were lost in the woods of your area, what plants would you know to use as food?
Oh my, that would be very hard! I can’t even tell which ones would be edible.

3. Are there any foods you like by themselves, but do not like when combined?
Ampalaya I want to eat by itself when its combined with other veggies, for example, to make pakbet, I dont like it anymore.

4. Have you ever had to take back or throw away a food or drink that had been recalled?
Yes, a milk from China!

5. Who taught you how to cook?
My Dad, would you believe? :)

Military Style of Eating

Boodle Fight

This is the what you call a Boodle Fight. It is a military style of eating where long tables are prepared and food are on top of the banana leaves. Viands and rice ready to eat using your bare hands, jugs of water are prepared on the side to wash hands before the "eating combat". With the signal to start the boodle fight, everyone aims for his/her position.

It is done to promote unity and camaraderie among the military and a sense of trust with their colleagues. After all, you eat with bare hands in a mountain load of food – which is I might need to add, arranged in such a way that it resembles the type of food you give to your pets.

Kitchen Gadgets Shopping

I bought a 16-pc Corningware set a few days ago. I noticed we had few serving dishes and since we already have Corelle dinnerware I thought we need to build up our dining set  so we can eat better. For us, presentation and ambience really helps in eating better (and more) so even in a simple way, I try to do it for my kids.

I’m trying to be better around the kitchen too. I have been cooking everyday and planning menus better. I am proud to say we have zero wastage in food! With a toddler in the house, that’s hard. Add to that a very picky 8-year old and I call that an accomplishment :)

I noticed though there are (so many) things that can make my life in the kitchen easier and it is my goal to make sure that I have them completed by the end of the year.

I need to complete my anolon utensil set:

These consists of  a ladle, a masher, a skimmer, a slotted turner, a spaghetti spoon, a solid spoon and a whisk.

I also want to replace my cookware set with the Infinite circulon series:

From Top (L-R): Infinite Circulon 16cm Non-Stick Milkpan; Infinite Circulon 24cm Non-Stick Saute Pan & Lid; Infinite Circulon 26cm Non-Stick Chef’s Pan; Infinite Circulon Non-Stick Frypan 24cm; Infinite Circulon Non-Stick Saucepan & Lid 16cm

And you know why I love these? They are so easy to clean!! Yes being in the kitchen also means I’m head dishwasher!

There is more but I will share it later.

Kitchen Shopping

I have taken a rest from shopping this month and plan to come back and shop with the vengeance maybe in July. I just need to prioritize some things in the house and the next shopping spree will be for our house, specifically the kitchen.

Here are some things I’m thinking of buying:
1. Another set of Corelle dinnerware
2. Kitchen gadgets
3. Toaster, griller, and rice cooker
4. Flatware – I want sold ones with no design
5. Rice dispenser
6. A utility shelf for our microwave that has drawers so it can serve as our pantry as well
