Dental Carries

My youngest complained of a toothache the other night. She just turned four and her front teeth has carries already because of prolonged bottle feeding I think. Before I take her to a charlotte cosmetic dentist, I need to make sure I can slowly wean her from the bottle. She still takes the bottle at least three times through out the night.

Tooth decay can happen when your child’s teeth come in contact with too much sugar. This sugar helps bacteria grow. Acids that the bacteria make cause the teeth to decay.

Many of the liquids that your child drinks contain sugar, including milk, formula, and fruit juices. Eating snacks with sugar also places more sugar on your child’s teeth.

How often your child drinks liquids containing sugar, and how long the sugar stays in the mouth are also important. When children sleep or walk around with a bottle or sippy cup in their mouth, sugar coats.

Prevention

Feeding tips to prevent tooth decay:

  • DO NOT fill your child’s bottle with fluids that are high in sugar, such as punch, gelatin, or soft drinks.
  • Put your child to bed with a bottle of water only — not juice, milk, or other drinks.
  • Give children ages 6 – 12 months only formula to drink in bottles.
  • Remove the bottle or stop nursing when your child has fallen asleep.
  • Avoid letting your child walk around using a bottle of juice or milk as a pacifier. Avoid prolonged use of pacifiers and DO NOT dip the pacifier in honey, sugar, or syrup.
  • Begin teaching your child to drink from a cup at around 6 months of age. Try to stop using a bottle by age 12 – 14 months.
  • Limit juice to fewer than 6 ounces per day during meals.

Tips for caring for your child’s teeth:

  • After each feeding, gently wipe your child’s teeth and gums with a clean washcloth or gauze to remove plaque.
  • Begin toothbrushing as soon as your child has teeth. Brush your teeth together, at least at bedtime. If you have an infant or toddler, place a small amount of non-fluoridated toothpaste on a washcloth and rub gently on their teeth. You can switch to fluoridated toothpaste when you are sure that your child spits out all of the toothpaste after brushing. Older children can use a toothbrush with soft, nylon bristles. Use a very small amount of toothpaste (no more than the size of a pea).
  • Begin flossing children’s teeth when all of the primary (baby) teeth have erupted (usually around age 2 1/2).
  • If your baby is 6 months or older, use fluoridated water or a fluoride supplement if you have well water without fluoride. If you use bottled water, make sure it contains fluoride.
  • Inspect your child’s teeth regularly and begin dental visits when all of the baby teeth have erupted or at age 2 or 3, whichever comes first.

Do You Have Bad Breath?

Halitosis, or bad breath, is a very embarrassing thing to have. Bad breath, morning breath, breath odor or halitosis are all terms used to describe a noticeably unpleasant odor exhaled on the breath. It usually happens when there are food particles left in the mouth, having dental carries is another factor. That’s why brushing and flossing your teeth is so important, but don’t forget to gently brush your tongue to get rid of even more bacteria.  Saliva actually helps sterilize our mouths too, they are considered a natural bad breath treatment!

Ways to Fight Against Bad Breath

  • Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth thoroughly after every meal to remove food particle from the mouth.
  • When you are brushing your teeth, also brush your tongue. The tongue is covered with thousands of tiny hairs that can trap bacteria.
  • Have regular check-ups with your dentist to rule out gum disease and to correct any faulty restorations, overhanging fillings or leaking crowns, all of which can trap food in the mouth.
  • Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless lozenges to increase the flow of saliva.
  • If your mouth is dry, drink plenty of water. Try swooshing it around in your mouth for at least twenty seconds to loosen any food particles the bacteria can feed upon.
  • Avoid breath mints and mouthwashes that contain alcohol. Instead of helping, they can make things worse. They only temporarily cover the smell and tend to dry the mouth, creating a more favorable environment for bacteria.
  • Snacking on vegetables such as raw celery or carrots can keep plaque from forming.
  • If you are going to an important meeting or on a big date, avoid foods that can cause bad breath, such as onions and garlic.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine consumption, which can dry the mouth.
  • Quit smoking. Tar and nicotine can build up on the surface of the teeth, tongue and cheeks. It can also dry the mouth and inhibit saliva flow.
  • Chlorophyll is a natural breath freshener and is found in leafy green vegetables like parsley.
  • A few drops of peppermint or tea tree oil can be applied to the tongue or toothbrush to help freshen the breath. In addition to its refreshing nature, their antibacterial properties will kill the bacteria found in the mouth.
  • Baking soda has a long history of being used to maintain good oral health and for fighting bad breath.
  • A mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water can be swooshed around in the mouth and used as a mouthwash. Hydrogen peroxide can kill many of the bacteria that can cause bad breath.

A Woman’s Guide to Coping With Erectile Dysfunction

A man has been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction, or ED, and this time, it’s your man. It’s a straightforward situation, right? All he needs to do is visit the doctor, buy Viagra, and everything will go back to normal. At least that’s what happens on the commercials. Television fails to illustrate how deep the pain and suffering is for a woman whose man has ED. Consider a few tips to help you get through this challenging time and come out the other side with a stronger relationship than you had before.

First, don’t blame yourself. Women tend to do this and believe that the ED is their fault in some way. Maybe you feel like you’re unattractive or you didn’t do the right things to stimulate him. This is likely to be nowhere near the truth. Almost every man will experience some form of ED at some point in his life. It is caused by stress, depression, or other reasons that aren’t really known. For some men, the problem keeps happening. While ED is a sexual issue, most of the time, its causes lie in other physical conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

It’s very important that you don’t start grilling your guy with endless questions. Don’t trying to get him to admit that he’s cheating and that’s why he’s not attracted to you anymore. Any man will see this kind of action as an attack and will retaliate or withdraw, resulting in a vicious cycle that’s very hard to stop. Once this cycle starts, communication ends and the relationship’s demise may not be far behind. The best thing that you can do is listen to your partner and try to understand this disorder for what it is: a medical condition. Be supportive and understand his treatment options. Things will perk up.

Cancer Hospitals Philadelphia

Cancer remains to be one of the highest causes of mortality around the world, this, despite of recent advances in technology to curing most forms of cancer. Early detection is still the best way to have a good prognosis, once cancer is already in the patient’s body. Of course, prevention is always the best thing. Doctors and scientists are still coming up with ways to identify potential carcinogens, but too much of everything, couple with genetics, seem to play a role in getting cancer into the body. Too much sun exposure, too much ingestion of certain chemicals and certain damaging lifestyle habits contribute to having more chances of getting the big C.

Cancer Hospitals Philadelphia are geared not only to medical treatment but holistic treatment of a patient. The Cancer Center at Aria Health provides a comprehensive range of high-quality patient-care and support services.  Board-certified surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists – as well as certified cancer nurses, social workers, and other healthcare team members – work together to treat both the physical and emotional sides of cancer in a comfortable setting.

Today cancer treatment centers are easily accessible to everyone located in many metropolitan areas. A number of them are affiliated with large university based hospitals, and provide the latest technology available to treat different types of cancers. These types of facilities are also research based and offer several new treatment alternatives to participants in a range of ongoing studies.

Eyeglasses vs. Contact Lenses

While I have been gifted with 20/20 vision even with continued exposure to the glare of the computer screen for more than 18hours a day on most weeks, my sister hasn’t been that lucky. We siblings were diagnosed with astigmatism when we were young – around 7 or 8, and all of us eventually corrected our vision with the help of eyeglasses, except for our youngest. She wears glasses to this day and often needs to have her eye prescription upgraded every year. As of the moment, her eyeglasses are thick and she is a prime candidate for Lasik Surgery actually. She has 2 eyeglasses (one for back up) and a pair of Acuvue oasys contacts.

She uses contact lenses for parties and presentations at work where she would need to be at her best. She loves Acuvue oasys contact lenses as it doesn’t irritate as it doesn’t irritate her eyes even if she sleeps with them on (She has a habit of doing that). Contact lenses are small round pieces of plastic worn on the cornea of the eyes. It is so light and thin that people do not feel a thing while wearing it. Unlike eye glasses, which can get uncomfortable and is prone to breaking and misplacing, contact lenses are pretty comfortable and there is little chance of any kind of irritation if instructions are followed properly. They can to a certain point protect the eyes from trauma unlike eyeglasses. A friend recently got into a car accident and pieces of glasses were everywhere and went into her eye. It was a good thing she was wearing contacts so there were just minimal abrasions to her lenses.

Planning a Family

Planning a family, or when babies will come into a marriage, is an important matter. While getting married is a serious decision that needs a lot of thinking and soul-searching, with a lot of self-maturity, planning a family involves two individuals taking more responsibility by bringing children into this world. That is why many couple forego having kids until they can really say they are ready and willing to sacrifice everything for their kids. Mothers are usually left with the big decision to leave their careers and stay at home to take care of the baby, as baby sitters and day care cost a lot.

Families today have so many personal differences and intricacies that they are complicated as a custom house plan. And it should be noted that no two families are the same, no matter how strong their similarities are.  There are so many things to take into account when deciding if you want a family and how large of a family you can support. The cost of a child is amazingly high during this time in history. It is quite ironic that there are couples who badly want and are capable of having kids but cannot have one. Couple go to fertility doctors, husbands try levitra, they risk and invest in intrauterine pregnancies but are unlucky. Yet there are couples, as young as teenagers still in high school, having babies left and right, and they consider abortion. It breaks my heart to hear stories like that. While I believe that family planning should be pro-choice, I feel strongly against taking one’s life. One should accept the consequences of one’s actions, and even if there would be complications, I am sure there is still more options than to terminate a life that is innocent in the first place. Adoption is one thing.

Counting Calories

I have never thought I would do this but here I am counting calories for two weeks now. Two weeks of counting calories aka DIETING and I am down to 8 lbs! Not bad, right? I have been trying to eat under my daily required calorie intake AND burning them off through exercise. My metabolism has been sluggish, owing to genetics, crash diets when I was younger and plain laziness (couch potato I am!). I need to jumpstart it once again hence I try to do some cardio activity three times a day. I need to add some core and strength training by next week to help me build some muscles so I can lose more fat, but I am taking it easy. If I keep this up, I will be at my ideal weight on December 31, 2010 (with a 2lb weight loss a week – do the math and you will know that’s how much weight I need to lose!). The husband has already agreed to take me to the beach (not a Branson vacation) by the time I reach 30 and that would be my only chance to see myself in an acceptable swimsuit :)

Wish me luck! I want to succeed on this! This is one aspect of my life I need to prove I can be successful too :D
